MEDICINE HAT, AB —A man arrested in August following an attempted carjacking at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Jesse Leckner, 26, appeared in Medicine Hat provincial court Tuesday, where he entered a guilty plea to one charge of theft under $5,000. He was sentenced to 120 days in prison, and also received one year of probation and was fined $200.

Leckner received credit for 78 days of pre-trial custody, meaning he has 42 days left to serve on his sentence.

Leckner was arrested on August 13 after trying to steal a truck from a 20 year-old-man from the parking lot at the hospitall. According to police, Leckner asked to sit inside the truck, and the driver allowed it, because it was for sale. When the truck’s owner attempted to end the conversation, Leckner refused to leave the truck and tried to take the keys. Police say bear spray was used in the attack, and Leckner took off with a backpack belonging to the driver.

An iPad was in the backpack, and police used a “find your device” app to locate the suspect, who was arrested on 11 Street SE.

Leckner was also facing charges of possession of a weapon dangerous to public, uttering threats, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breaching probation. Those charges were withdrawn.
