ICE sink Tigers with last second goal

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Brett Davis stunned the Medicine Hat Tigers, scoring the game winning goal with 4.2 seconds left to lead the Kootenay ICE to a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night.

Davis, coming off a two-goal performance against Saskatoon over the weekend, cut into the high slot and fired a low snapper that fooled Tigers netminder Jordan Hollett. The puck dribbled over the goal-line and into the empty cage, completing a two-goal comeback from the visiting ICE.

This marks Kootenay’s first win over the Tigers this season after losing the first three battles. Now winners of two-straight, the ICE have climbed to nine points back of the Tigers for the Central Division lead.

ICE forward Martin Bodak opened the scoring 6:04 into the game on the powerplay. But the Tigers were quick to answer with tallies from Mark Rassell, James Hamblin, and Ryan Chyzowski before the end of the frame.

Captain Rassell now has a career high 38 goals on the season, sitting third in league scoring. Of Chyzowski’s 15 goals this year, four have came agains the ICE.

The only goal of the second period came off the stick of Bodak — his second of the night marking the Slovak’s first career multi-goal game. Medicine Hat held a 11-6 shot advantage in the middle frame and lead 3-2 with 20 minutes to play.

WIth under nine minutes left, the ICE completed the two-goal comeback. Rookie Peyton Krebs broke down the right wing side with King at his side on an odd-man rush. Krebs pass went off King’s skate as he went sliding into the net behind Hollett, tying the game 3-3.

Medicine Hat is now 17-2 when leading after two periods.

Duncan McGovern, once a Medicine Hat Tiger before being traded to the ICE earlier this season, allowed three goals on the first 13 shots. But the Winnipeg-product settled in nicely for the final two frames, making 34 saves in total.

Hollett allowed four goals on 22 shots.

Next up, the Tigers host the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday at the Canalta Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
