Retirements providing opportunity for new firefighters

MEDICINE HAT – Medicine Hat Fire Service will begin a recruitment process in February.

Two Platoon Chiefs have announced their retirements in 2018 and those positions will have to be replaced.

Platoon Chief Terry Flaig is one of the retirees. He’ll be celebrating his 40 years of service with his retirement.

“I started on March 27th 1978, and my last day of employment is March 27th 2018.”

In the last four decades Flaig said a lot has changed. Everything from the protective gear and the fire trucks, to the training and health and safety requirements.

“It’s black and white,” he said of the trucks and equipment changes. “You just can’t believe how much easier and quicker it is to set up and get the water where it needs to be, for example.”

Fire Chief Brian Stauth said even though there will only be a couple of openings he expects more than 100 people will apply for a position with the Medicine Hat Fire Service. The service does the recruiting process once every two years and keeps the best candidates on file for positions that come open.

“It’s a rigorous process because we are looking for the very best people we can find,” said Stauth.
