Family proud of replica Ghostbusters car

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Matt Hubbard’s two children are huge fans of Ghostbusters.

“It’s just a good movie,” said Luke, his son. “I like the car, and stuff like that..”

“I like it because it’s just really funny and cool,” said his daughter Katelyn.

So, it’s fitting that they helped their dad turn a 1992 Cadillac hearse into a replica version of the ECTO-1, the car the team drives in the movies. The car more closely remembles the Ecto 1 as it appeared in the 2016 reboot.

“They see it at the movies, and then I got the kind of ‘Dad, I bet you could build it,’” said Matt. “The next thing you know, I’m out in Saskatchewan picking up this vehicle we found online.”

Matt and his kids worked on the re-creation together. The car got a new coat of paint and a new roof rack, complete with all the required gear to bust ghosts. It also includes a working megaphone and lights.

“It was a little bit rough around the edges,” said Matt. “The vehicle, it used to be silver, with a silver roof, so obviously we had to get some body work and paint on the vehicle.”

It took approximately 10 months to build the car, and involved plenty of visits to scrap yards and swap meets to give the spirited vehicle the perfect touch.

Despite looking like something strange in your neighborhood, Matt says it drives like a dream. Katelyn says the car gets a lot of looks while on the street.

“Every time we go out in it, people are always just like ‘Oh my god, it’s the Ghostbusters car!” she said.

The family loves the car, but they’re looking to sell it and find their next project to work on.

“To me, this was just another project,” said Matt. “Now, it’s up for sale, and we want to fill the space and build another car.”
