MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s shaping up to be a hot day on Saturday, and members of the city’s running community are taking note.

The 39th annual Rattler Run takes place on Saturday at Medicine Hat College, and race director Tara Chisholm says the number of racers registered is beginning to climb.

“Ever since the sun decided to come out again in Medicine Hat, I think people are getting excited about being outside, and running or walking is a big part of that for a lot of people,” she said.

Chisholm says they’re expecting more than 700 runners this year.

The temperature is currently projected to hit a high of 27 degrees Celsius on Saturday, according to Environment Canada, and athletes are reminded to take precautions and be aware of the heat

“We’ll of course have our water stations, so (we’re) making sure people take advantage of them if they need it,” said Chisholm. “Don’t try and push yourself through it. If you need a drink of water while you’re going, that’s why they’re there.”

Online registration wraps up Thursday night, but those interested can still register in person at Medicine Hat College on Friday, or sign up the morning of the run. Online registration is available here for the 3 kilometre, 5 kilometre or 10 kilometre route. More information about the run can be found here.

The race gets underway at 11 a.m. with the 10 km participants heading out onto the course.
