Medicine Hat, AB– A young woman from Bow Island wants to see more females in the world of politics- so she is heading to Parliament Hill.

Rachel Grigg, a fourth year political science major at the University of Calgary, is heading to Ottawa this week for the second ‘Daughters of the Vote’ event as the delegate for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner.

The four day event will host 338 women to represent their respective Member of Parliament’s seat and have the chance to advocate for issues in their community.

The Ottawa summit is organized by Equal Voice Canada, an organization aiming to have more women elected to all levels of political office in Canada.

“Women have made significant political gains over the last century. But that doesn’t mean we can become complacent. We need to continue to ask tough questions and made demands for our rights and untimely, I believe every single person should be able to look at their government and see themselves represented.” Grigg said. “Canada’s strength is in our diversity and we need to ensure that all Canadians are heard and represented in government.”

Grigg, who is a co-founder and co-president of U of C’s Women in Politics Club also commented on the issues that young people in southern Alberta are facing in this provincial election.

“I would say one of the largest challenges for young people in our area, is that we have less access to services and opportunities then those in larger centres do. There’s just less employment and education opportunities for people living in small centres and there are less services and support for those living in small places, especially in the rural areas.”

In addition to testifying before parliamentary committees and participating in various leadership workshops, the delegates will be addressed by every federal party leader.
